Kalki and Vikraman

Books
Last two weeks have been wonderful. What made it wonderful were Sivakamiyin sabadham, Parthiban Kanavu and Nandhipurathu Nayagi.

Ponniyin Selvan ,Sivakamiyin sabadham and Parthiban Kanavu are books by Kalki.

In Sivakamiyin Sabadham, he has dealt with Pallavas and in Parthiban Kanavu, it is a combination of Cholas and Pallavas, where in Parthiba Cholan's son Vikraman and Narasimha pallavan's daughter Kundavai lose their hearts to each other and get married in the end.
Raja Raja Cholan was born nearly 3 centuries after that.Ponniyin Selvan is about his period.
Nandhipurathu Nayagi by Vikraman is a continuation of Ponniyin Selvan, which answers many questions that were left unanswered in Ponniyin Selvan.

I have nearly fallen in love with these genre of books.Wud like to go back to those days and live among those people.

To read yet:
1.Gangapuri Kaavalan by Vikraman on Rajendra Cholan.
2. Kadalpura by Chandilyan.

Characters I love
Of all the characters I have read so far in these books, Inbavalli has captured my heart like no others.I can't exactly define why. For people who haven't read the book, she is a character(this is very humble description) in the story Nandhipurathu Nayagi written by Vikraman. The next character I love is Sivakami(but lost some liking after she refused to return with Narasimha Pallavan, when he came to bring her back to his country).

Why?
One striking thing in all these books is the kings(Mahendra Pallavan) or anybody else(Ilayapraatti Kundavai), etc don't let Sivakami or Inbavalli to get close with the Prince. I hate that attitude of theirs. Sivakami and Inbavalli are Bharathanatya dancers. Considering the status, Mahendra pallavan and Kundavai don't let them get close with their princes, though the two dancers are not court dancers or courtesans. They give a almost unacceptable reason that they are doing it to keep the art alive. Will write about this sometime later.

Few links
Kalki's works in Tamil font
Sivagamiyin Sabadham in English

Coming soon...
Will be writing a separate post on Inbavalli soon.

Hey any idea if there are any English translations of the book? My mom has read almost all of these and she keeps talking about it. But interested as I might be, I find it very hard to read in Tamizh and besides, I might encounter some very difficult words whose meaning I wouldn't be able to decipher. Can you please please please let me know if there are English translations and if yes, can you also tell me where to find them? :) Illana naan ezhuthu kooti thaan padikkanum! :)

Hi Fatz. This is the first time i'm viewing ur blog and am really amazed at the talk on Tamil novels. I've read Kalki's Ponniyen Selvan. It is a wonderful novel. I'm a bit surprised that u havnt mentioned abt Vandhiya Devan. I've started reading Yavana Rani by Chandilyan whos style differs a lot from Kalki's. Will try some of Vikraman's novels as well. Thankx for the info.

Swas, I would suggest you to read the Tamil version of Ponniyin Selvan. The language used is simpler when compared to other novels like the ones by Chandilyan. Idhula vara iyarkai varnanai padikarapo... cha Tamil Nadu oru kalathula ipidi ellam kuda irundhiruka nu nenaika thonum.. Do read it in Tamil.

Hello there,
it is so nice to see that people still admire historical novels.
Well I am from Jaffna, Sri Lanka originally. When I first read Ponniyen Selvan I was about 9 or 10 years old. since then I would have read it over and over for atleast 17 or 18 times. And each time I read I find some thing new to appreciate.
Well yes it is true these novels by Kalki, and others take us back to the time. It also remind us what we were and what we have lost. And what we are loosing for ever.
The original Ponniyen Selvan at the end of 5th volume Kalki gave some historical fact what happened afterwards. And he mentioned that those facts are enough to write another novel. Infact Nandhipurathu Nayagi is based on those fact.
Keep chatting we can learn more together

Hi Friends,
Iam Srinivasan, its amazing to see that so many people are ardent followers of Kalki, I have not read Ponniyin selvan but happened to read Udaiyar(6 volumes)by Balakumaran, it was mind blowing. The novel speaks about food, clothing, culture, valour, courage of cholas and most importantly how brihadeeswarar temple was built?what were the hardships faced by raja raja and how he overcame those.I was astonished by the fact that how could a king(Raja Raja)in 1010 AD can possess enormous amount of talent, resource planning, time management, continous learning, respect for individual etc.,(now I think most of the IT companies will have atleast one of the above as its values)Its a must read novel and I am sure once you complete the novel you will definitely fill blogs.I think its available at Thirumagal prasuram.
