hmmm...
may be coz the prince knew that if some one liked his worst,if he started there, things will only keep getting better..

Iris, its not that lady liked the prince as a beast. He turned into a beast, once he was sure that he got the lady, taking her for granted.
Parthi, the poem means, after few days, the love of lady, who treated her as good as a Prince, started treating her as if he had become a beast.

then...
He turned into a best in self defence :-)
Seriously,
he might have wanted to see whether she can show unconditional love...
May be love can turn a beast back to what it was(that's why she still loves him?)...
(but frankly, on one 'has to' put up with it)
